Interventional cardiological techniques including coronary angioplasty and stent implantation, defect closure and valvuloplasty. Percutaneous aortic replacement, Mitral valve disease, Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and sports cardiology.
Dr Shapiro has other diverse clinical interests and is the Medical Advisor to the Football Association, especially involved in screening footballers for heart disease. Dr Shapiro established a nationwide cardiac screening programme to look for life-threatening heart problems in young footballers to prevent the tragedy of sudden death. Dr Shapiro, in conjunction with the medical department of the football association and the professional footballers association, has examined nearly 10,000 footballers in this ongoing project. Dr Shapiro has a special interest in the hearts of athletes and has published widely on this subject.
